Interesting things around Fownhope

 

Ross-on-Wye is about seven miles away. It is a pretty market town overlooking the Wye, with good cafes, supermarkets and lots of antique shops. Ross also has a swimming pool at the bottom of the town. On the first Friday of the month there is a Farmers market at the Market cross, where local producers sell their excellent cheese vegetables and organic meat. Ross International  festival happens every August. Details from the festival office in Ross, local papers or their website. Book early for popular events. Ross has a Sunday car boot at the cattle market from 10am, often good for fruit and veg and occasionally some useful collectable bits among the tat.

Ledbury is about six miles away and is a delightful little market town , mainly unspoilt with many timber framed buildings. It has an interesting museum up one of the tiny lanes, teashops pubs and a good selection of shops.They have a Saturday market where you can buy French bread from a French baker, it also has a butcher who sells organic meat from rare breeds.The church is early English.

Hereford the cathedral is wonderful and houses the Mappa Mundi and has a chained library. Market day is on Wednesday. The cattle market has a fine selection of hens, ducks, rabbits, sheep and cattle etc. There is a theatre and cinema and swimming pool. More information from the local tourist office or local papers.

Churches. There are several local churches worth mentioning Brockhampton, Arts and crafts movement, Hoarwithy, Italianate with mosaics and imported marble,Kilpeck famous for its Norman stone carvings, Much Marcle 15th century wood and stone carved figures. Marcle church also has a spectacular yew tree which is many hundreds and may be more than a thousand years old. The centre is hollow and has benches to sit on.

Capler Camp, the Wye valley is a mass of iron age earthworks and camps. Capler, the nearest , has fine views and is an ideal site for a picnic.The circular walk to Capler camp from the cottage is about seven miles part of which is along the Wye Valley Walk.

Hellens, a wonderful old house in Much Marcle which dates from 1200. It is only open between Easter and October. Highly recommended if you like old houses.

Westons cider factory in Much Marcle where you can tour the factory and taste the cider and perry. They also have a shop and restaurant. The apples from our orchard go there.

Mordiford is two miles from Fownhope on the Hereford road. It has an ancient stone bridge over the river Lugg. Wonderful walks along the river. The Lugg is listed as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

The cottage is about five hundred metres from the Wye Valley Walk. There are also lots of wonderful local walks in the woods and fields around the village.

Hay-on -Wye is about thirty miles away. It is famous for its second hand bookshops and its jazz festival.

Fishing. The Wye and the Lugg are both good fishing rivers, stretches of both are day ticket waters. Although far less than there used to be there are salmon and trout in the rivers. The Wye also has allis shad which appear at certain times. Coarse fishing is excellent with double figure barbel and plenty of chub. Day tickets to fish local stretches of the rivers can be bought from the Green Man or the post office at Mordiford.

Symonds Yat is worth a visit. Stunning views over the river. There are beautiful woods and in the spring and early summer, peregrine falcons nest on the river cliffs.

Monmouth is about 12 miles from Ross, an old border town on the side of the Wye.

Tintern Abbey is on the road from Monmouth to Chepstow along the Wye valley.

The Forest of Dean is full of interesting places. The woods are spectacular in the spring with carpets of bluebells. You can hire bicycles locally or go horseriding.
